Transformers (2007)

Dir. MIchael Bay

Again mildly entertaining, but really not a very great film. The characters may have appealed more to some, but I was mostly bored. I probably would have liked it more when I was in high school.

There are two points I’d like to make. First, the f/x was pretty cool. The “transformations” were pretty well-done. The filmmakers were really recreating the transforming machines in anime, and they did an excellent recreation of that. On the other hand, this is a Michael Bay film, and so you don’t really get good views of the action.

The second thing that I wanted to comment on was the fact that the film seems just as much of a commercial as a entertainment film–specifically for the US military and cars. The scenes with the military feel and sound very much like a commercial. I don’t care for Bay, but his use of music and moving cameras and edits prior to action sequences are really effective and appealing. These pre-battle sequences are effective. He’s effective at creating a kind of feel and sound, but it can be frustrating, too.

Just saw the sequel, which seemed unanimously panned by critics and movie-goers alike. I guess it is because I had such low expectations that when I walked out of the theatre, I thought to myself, “Geez, that wasn’t so bad.”

Of course, that is not a ringing endorsement. If you want to see machines fight and a lot of stuff get blown up along with some sophomoric humor, this is the movie for you. All the actors were interchangeable, imo. Any tough and good-looking hottie could have played Megan Fox’s role. Any slightly awkward but committed-when-the-chips-are-down guy could have taken Shia LeBeouf’s place. It was all about the robots and the explosions. Michael Bay in his comfort zone.

How did it compare to the first Transformers? I really liked the first one, but didn’t care to see the second after all the bad reviews.

Hi Don! I don’t think it was as good as the first Transformers. There’s a plot, but it’s mainly there so the action sequences make sense. (The first one had more of a plot, tho’ the sequel sets up why the machines are here, but it’s more expository than revealed in the plot).

There is some attempt at humor, but it’s not very funny (dogs and robots humping kinda stuff). But the machines fighting and transforming is cool. The main reason I saw it was because I thought if the best thing about the movie was the machines fighting/special fx, then I wanted to see it on a big screen. If you have a fairly large tv, though, I would say this could wait until it comes out on DVD. If you do go to see it in the theatre, go with LOW expectations. 😉

Yo Don! Just wondering if you ever did decide to see this movie and if so, what you thought about it. Inquiring minds want to know.

Sorry Pen did not see this post before.

    No I didn’t see the movie…

That’s okay…it’ll come out on DVD soon, I’m sure! Ooh, then you can get it on Netflix which is waaayyy cheaper than seeing it in the theatre. 😉
