Are there any candidates for greatest films of all-time? best of the decade?
No, I don’t think there are any films that would qualify as greatest of all-time. Once might be candidate for the best of the decade, but I’m not that strong about that pick.

Are there are candidates for the best of particular genre?
    None that I see.

Are there any films that you think others should see–either because it’s great or really entertaining?
Once, Away From Her and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. I would recommend this to almost every idiot.

What were films that you think were overrated?
There Will be Blood. I think I gave this a 7 because it was engaging. And there’s some good filmmaking, but it’s overrated in the sense that it’s pretentious–trying to go for grand themes, but with the results being a little hollow. I don’t think the film will age well and didn’t deserve the critical acclaim it received.

The enthusiasm for Ratatouille puzzled me as well. Yes, it was nice to look at, but I acdtually didn’t think the animation was as fabulous as critics raved. I also think the story and characters were weak. The script didn’t seem focused.

Juno was also OK, but not deserving of a best-picture nomination.

    What films deserved more attention?
Before the Devil Knows You Are Dead received considerable acclaim, but it received little nominations. It deserved best picture (given the other films) and best director. Gone Baby Gone surprised me, and I’m pretty sure almost everyone would like htis.

The Lookout was not a great film, but it was one of those smaller films that managed to be fairly smart and well done.

Are there any films that do a good job of capturing the spirit of the times?
The Visitor was a fine movie and captured the spirit of the times in a way that wasn’t too preachy.

    What were you favorite films?
Once was probably my favorite. I loved the ending. I also like Away From Her, a great debut for the director and nice subtle approach. No Country for Old Men, Before the Devil Knows You Are Dead, The Visitor
