The Most Entertaining Movies I Saw from 2016-2026

After watching Weapons, I thought it was one of the most entertaining films I’d seen in a long, long time. But to see if this was really the case, I went back and scanned all the films I’d seen in the last ten years–not just current releases, but older films as well. In this thread, I’m going to list those films, and talk about a few of them.

  1. Some random comments about the films above:

    • Manchester by the Sea, 20th Century Women, and Certain Women are entertaining, but more dramatic and serious–and they almost don’t belong on the list because of that. Most of the other films are entertaining, in a fun way, for the most part.
    • I really enjoyed Night Has a Thousand Eyes, primarily because Edward G. Robinson serves as a kind of narrator, whose storytelling was really engaging. Not a great movie perhaps, but it really held my attention from start to finish. I want to say this film and Weapons are in the top tier by themselves.
    • The Daytrippers, Wind River, and Hell or High Water come very close to these two. The Daytrippers has the mix of comedy and drama, like an indy James L. Brooks film or Norman Lear sit-com. Wind River and Hell or High Water are Taylor Sheridan films, either via the directing and/or writing. Hell is the better and more interesting film, but I like both to the point where I have re-watched them more than once.

    • Maybe The Big Sick belongs in the group above. It’s sort of has that James L. Brooks feel as well, but less than The Daytrippers. I really enjoyed that film as well.
    • Knives Out was a well-done and satisfying work of entertainment.
    • For whatever reason, 2015-2016 produced films I really enjoyed.

    More later.
